Period Planting
Period Planting products are disposable period products designed to be planted rather than thrown away.
This project was the first half of my senior thesis. It stemmed from the need to address all of the waste that is generated from menstruation. This project is a forward-thinking speculative futuristic design that is based on existing research around using menstruation blood as fertilizer. The average menstruating human will have a period for around 38 years. In that time a single menstruator will throw out an average of 8,000 to 17,000 tampons. In the U.S. alone, approximately 12 billion pads and 7 billion tampons will be thrown out in a year.
Period blood is already known to be an excellent fertilizer because it contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium which are all ingredients in store-bought fertilizers. Made out of organic cotton with a seed mat or seed pod internally in the design.
